Racing de Montevideo Makes History: First Championship Title in 107 Years

Munich/ Los Angeles/ Montevideo – Racing Club de Montevideo has achieved what generations of “Cerveceros” have dreamed of: With two matchdays remaining, “La Escuelita” has secured the title in the 2026 Apertura tournament with an unassailable seven-point lead – the first major triumph in the club’s 107-year history.

In the Uruguayan league system, the Apertura is one of two six-month tournaments. As its winner Racing has qualified for the final championship playoffs which will be played in fall. In the semifinals, they will face the winner of the Clausura tournament.

A championship story of courage, passion, and faith

Racing’s championship story is one of courage, passion, and unshakable faith in their own style of play. After an opening-day loss to Deportivo Maldonado, the team went twelve games unbeaten, celebrating nine wins and three draws. Racing is not only the youngest team in the Uruguayan Primera División – with an average age of just 23.7 years – but also the most consistent and courageous. With high-pressure play, unbridled intensity, and a clear philosophy, the team has played its way to the top.

The moment of triumph came in an unusual way: On the way back from an away game in Melo, the team received word that their closest rival and record champion, Peñarol, had lost its match – Racing had clinched the title early. In the middle of the night, hundreds of fans were already waiting at Parque Roberto in the heart of Sayago to welcome their heroes. The streets around the stadium became the stage for a spontaneous, exuberant celebration that made the pride and solidarity of an entire neighborhood palpable.

This coming Sunday, the official championship celebration, including the trophy presentation, will take place at home at Parque Roberto—a celebration that connects the club’s long history with its new future. With the Apertura title, Racing has not only qualified for the 2026 championship playoff but has also secured a spot in the 2027 Copa Sudamericana.

The Road to the Top

After difficult years and relegation to the second division, Fernando Cavenaghi took over as sporting director and owner in 2021. The return to the Primera División in 2023 marked the beginning of a new era: the strategic partnership with Red&Gold Football, now the majority owner, brought a breath of fresh air and sustainable investments—from the expansion of the training center to the renovation of the youth academy. At the heart of it all is always the club’s identity as “La Escuelita”—the little school. The promotion of young talent is not just lip service, but a lived reality. The youngest team in the league, international tournament successes such as the U19 victory in Munich, and three consecutive appearances in the Copa Sudamericana are visible signs of this philosophy.

Red&Gold Football congratulates Racing

Red&Gold Football congratulates the team, the coaching staff, and the entire club leadership on this milestone. This title is the result of hard work, smart decisions, and unwavering unity. Racing de Montevideo has made history. And the next step toward a successful future has already been taken.
