Omar Badjie named Player of the Tournament at WAFU-A U17 Championship
The Gambia’s Young Scorpions have been crowned WAFU-A U17 champions after defeating Senegal 5–3 on penalties following a goalless draw in the final. Their impressive run also secured qualification for the next U17 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco in 2027.
Three talents from Gambinos Stars Africa — Muhammed Trawally, Omar Badjie and Mamadi Camara — were part of the victorious Gambian national team and played an important role in the team’s success. The Young Scorpions completed the tournament unbeaten across all five matches. They recorded victories over Sierra Leone, Mauritania and Liberia, while drawing against Senegal in the group stage before facing the same opponents again in the final.
The tournament proved particularly memorable for Omar Badjie, who was named Player of the Tournament. The Gambinos Stars Africa player was also named Player of the Match on two occasions, scoring three goals and providing one assist during the competition.
With their WAFU-A title secured, the Young Scorpions will now represent the region at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in 2027.
